It is certainly misleading to suggest that Danish is only or typically a
pauper's food, and I'm glad that we can now agree on that very simple point.
They were and are available from both "lower-brow" food vendors *and* in
up-market coffee shops, restaurants and, particularly, department store food
courts. The implication and context in the text does not support the idea
that Ditzah likes Danish because she's concerned with economy.
And the point remains that the accumulation of these details in the text
reveals the Pisk twins as loud (later Pynchon refers to them as behaving
"boisterously"), conceited, politically insensitive, and accustomed to
privilege. They are satirised by Pynchon.
