Me, I largely lived off, er, hot nuts and
meat-on-a-stick (oh, what a giveaway ...) for ten
days, as I never once stopped for lunch whilst running
from museum to museum to theater to .... My hostess
was on the Atkins diet, but she did get me a carton of
orange juice, a box of Grape Nuts Flakes and a gallon
of milk for breakfast. Going out for dinner was
interesting. A Polish restaurant where everything
came with side orders of cucumbers and beets (this I
was used to, as my grandparents were second
generation) and a glass of pear juice (this I wasn't
quite so well acquainted with ...). An Indian place
that, being a long, mirror-lined corridor festooned
with red chili pepper Christmas tree lights, had the
ambiance of an electric disco colon (this is a
recommenation, by the way ...). A middle eastern
place where we made one of the busboys read our
fortunes in the coffee silt (me, I apparently needed a
new bed, and, lo and behold, I'm now moving ...).
Burger King at midnight in a Times Square strangely
devoid of peep shows, prostitution, intravenous drug
use, and sailors brawling with Marines, me with a
veggie burger and a diet Dr. Pepper and her with four
doubl cheeseburgers miuns the buns but with a pile of
pickles, lettuce, and mayonnaise packets (reverse
Jack/Mrs. Sprat here, by the way ...). That enormous
cheesecake place in downtown Brooklyn, with only me
eating cheesecake (pile of sausage for her). And
every bar with country & western on the jukebox and $2
Pabst Blue Ribbon (which I won;t drink here 'cos of
the labor problems, but ...), including Coyote Ugly
(male bartender, no dancing, no abuse, thank God) ...
