Just imagine reading the biography of malcolm x and then reading
gravity's rainbow. you would surely get a good chuckle when slothrop
bends over that toilet. i think that it's safe to say that P's novels
can be funny, but his satirical-parodic-palimpsest can be Very very
funny if you know the text(s) he's working with. Adams, Graves Rand,
Eliade, Jonas, Teilhard de Chardin, T. S. Eliot, Conrad, Fitzgerald,
Joyce, Baedeker, on and on.
Sometimes he pokes fun at authors, Mr. Graves, Mr. Charles Lutwidge
Dodgson. Sometimes he pokes fun at an entire generation, the WSC (V.).
The sickness of the WSC is not identical with the sickness of Mondaugan.
However, the sickness of the WSC has many of the same symptoms. In CL49
Oedipa says she is something of a young republican. Why does P make his
quest-protagonist a "conservative" housewife? Well, cause it's funny.
Why else? The College Of The Surf is no Columbia or Berkeley, maybe.
Funny.
