One of the most radical aspects of 24fps, it seems to me,
is that it was founded by women. Clearly, Frenesi and the
Pisks are in charge. They decide where to go, what risks to
take, what shots to make, and, the editing of the final product.
Sledge and Howie have freedom of opinion but ultimately follow
orders.
That in and of itself would be enough to make this women's
collective during the late sixties, early seventies, an inversion
of the status quo. But this is a unique and radical group. That
they further take on the commercial media and the system, in
general, is more evidence of just how far ahead of their times
they were.
While it is true that Frenesi becomes the pawn of Brock Vond who
subverts the activist agenda of the group through her, to assume
that the group is a failure because of Frenesi's idealism is short-sighted.
The Pisks, DL, Mirage are more than just a radical film collective. They
are a group of caring women who are committed to eachother, and
whose feminine commitment transcends the human failings of any
one of them. That's what is most radical about their portrayal. They
survive as a group of women, inspite of their failings. They prevail.
Nothing in the novel matches their collective stength. Their mutual
commitment may bend but it does not break.
The Wheeler-Meter, or even the Wheeler-Meter-Zuniga constellations
are wan by comparison with the women. While from a more mythic
perspective- by the time the sun sets on Vineland- Weed and Vond
have tumbled from their chariots.
