Moody was something of a Lifer. An MP during W.W.II, he was stationed at
Levinworth after the War. That's where DL was born. Again, prison & work
are major theme in this novel and should not be wiped away like too much
grease in a rusty old clunky  plot. He is stationed in  Japan between
Korea and Vietnam.  

Page 118, DL morphs into Moody when she and Frenesi meet. DL shows
Frnesi photos of her old man in full-dress uniform, ribbons and medels
(120). 

Again, it's the  TURNS that are important. 

And boy does the wheel ever turn. 

Moody is a Rounder. 

Moody joins the army to avoid jail. 

Again work and prison. 

At sea he has a comic-book Revelation. 

Moody will become an MP. 


Moody beats his wife. 

His wife finds Jesus. 

DL eggs her old man on so that he will beat her mother. 

DL longs to get the old man in the ring and kick his ass. 

Mom, meanwhile, is fucking Moody's CO. 

Moody, an MP,  beats up his own guys, drunk sailors. 

It's his job, her mother tells her, everyone has to ... 

You mean everyone has to lay there and take it?  

DL mixes this up, "the birds and the bees story" her mom tells her is
about work and prison.
