I'm still a reasonably good athlete, particularly in the standard
American big three: Baseball, Basketball and American Football.
Despite that, and the fact that I find myself gawking at a tube
occasionally- if a game happens to be on while I'm passing through-
I've come to the conclusion that these professional mega-spectacles
are a waste of time. Come to think about it, I'm mildly annoyed that
Pynchon is doing the Simpsons thing- of course I'll watch, but it's
one more example of a "hero" selling out. Not the end of my world
view, and not overly surprising, given the embarrassing marketing
gaffs surrounding the '97 release of M&D, but mildly annoying, none-
the-less.
We are not privvy to ulterior motives, of course, but assuming that
P. simply enjoys the Simpsons, and by extension, sucks down the tube
on a regular basis, and probably much other American popular trash,
that would go some distance in filling in some of the missing context
of his personality. Speculation, fer sure, but... But if that "regular
guy" bag is not too far off, it is interesting to contrast it with the
angst and alienation of a Kirkpatrick Sale, for example, or, to
speculate on where Farina might be at this point in time, if he had
survived- probably closer to Homer than Kirkpatrick- impossible to
know. Of course, P.'s performance might somehow surprise us all. We'll
see.

Good. Leave it to M.G. to know that one should not put major cultural events
in conflict.
One of my ex's is an alto. Some dickbrain from the Longy school scheduled a
performance for her chorale group in a church in Lincoln MA. on Superbowl
Sunday. Never before nor since has an angrier man sat through Monteverdi in
a Unitarian church in a pristine snowy New England setting. >>
