The episode at the College of the Surf is set in 1969, but the episodes
at Berkeley are sometime earlier, 67-68.

You are implying that I'm arguing that Pynchon set out to ridicule Sale
or his text. I'm not. 

Pynchon's episode is a parodic fictionalization of the events and
organizations described by Sale.
