Yes, the song DL hears on the radio as she is fleeing California to start up
a new life and new identity in Ohio is 'People Are Strange (When You're a
Stranger) (133). Apart from the nostalgia it must hold for her (and note
also that she buys a '66 Plymouth Fury), the lyrics are significant to DL's
current situation, which is probably why she remembers it so vividly.
The records which are played at the place where Frenesi and DL first meet
afford "jukebox solidarity" with the student "Revolution" (117-8), and each
of the bands mentioned were just starting to break into the charts and had
been playing gigs in and around Berkeley in the early months of 1967 (apart
from Hendrix, who comes to Monterey in June, but 'Hey Joe' had been out
since October of the previous year). As with the College of the Surf kids
"listening to Mike Curb Congregation records on the radio" (205), and the
list of "Thanatoid favorites" (225), I don't think that Pynchon is
name-dropping these songs and groups just to mark the dates.
