This statement is inaccurate and, imo, tends to
perpetuate the myth of Pynchon as recluse.  Pynchon
has talked with and otherwise helped journalists on
several occasions throuhout his career to date. He
seems to have done his best "to shun publicity" until
the publication of Mason & Dixon, when he initiated a
telephone interview with CNN, and more recently when
his voluntary participation in Hadju's book project,
_Positively 4th Street_ and his appearance on The
Simpsons, generated widespread media coverage.
