Along with _Libra_, it's one of his best. It's also worth recalling that
Pynchon blurbed DeLillo's _Mao II_, which features a "reclusive author"
named Bill Gray as one of its main characters. (I think the general
consensus is that Salinger rather than Pynchon is the more likely model for
Bill Gray, however, which goes back to your point about the difference
between a "recluse", which is indeed an apt label for Salinger but not so
for Pynchon, and what you described as being "publicly reclusive", i.e.
someone like Pynchon who doesn't do interviews and publicity or go to awards
ceremonies, books signings and the like.)
