[...] I don't think the fact that Pynchon hasn't
disclaimed the Japan
Playboy "interview" proves anything. For a start, he
has no legal recourse
to something published in Japan anyway, [...]

Could you cite a source that explains how the Japanese
legal system would prevent Pynchon from taking legal
action against a magazine that published an interview
that turned out to be a hoax?

I ask because, having spent several years in the late
1980s and early '90s as the US West Coast
correspondent for Japan's largest publisher of
computer business magazines (SOFTBANK), I was
instructed by my editors to fact-check everything in
order to avoid legal action against the Japanese
magazines by any American companies or individuals
mentioned in the articles I wrote.

(By the way, Pynchon demonstrates, in Vineland, that
he he knows Japan rather well.)

Given Pynchon's past promptness in taking or
threatening legal action to prevent publication of his
photograph, access to letters he's written, etc., the
fact that he has not taken legal action against
Playboy Japan bears strong witness to the interview's
authenticity (in addition to Playboy Japan's
insistence, when asked, that the interview was
authentic and approved by Pynchon).

Add the facts that Pynchon let himself be interviewed
for Positively 4th Street, and let himself be
interviewed by a CNN journalist (who asked questions
which Pynchon answered) on the telephone, and it
appears that Pynchon does not is not as rabidly
anti-journalist as jbor, nor as consistent in his
efforts to remain out of the public eye as jbor and
the rest of the Pynchon mythmakers would have him.

"He has proven himself willing to step out of the
shadows from time to time -- but on his own terms."

<http://www.cnn.com/US/9706/05/pynchon/> that's the
source of the "reclusive author" quote that serves as
jbor's sail across his sea of sliding signifiers
