"Along with _Libra_, [White Noise] one of his best. It's also worth
recalling that
Pynchon blurbed DeLillo's _Mao II_, which features a "reclusive author"
named Bill Gray as one of its main characters. (I think the general
consensus is that Salinger rather than Pynchon is the more likely model
for
Bill Gray, however, which goes back to your point about the difference
between a "recluse", which is indeed an apt label for Salinger but not so
for Pynchon, and what you described as being "publicly reclusive", i.e.
someone like Pynchon who doesn't do interviews and publicity or go to
awards
ceremonies, books signings and the like.)"
That reminded me that when Mao II first came out, I wrote Delillo a
letter asking him if any of Bill Gray was based on Pynchon and if that
was the case, should Pynchon's fans be concerned for his personal well
being, and was there anything that could be done to help. Delillo never
answered the letter.
And I also think that White Noise is outstanding, in my opinion far and
away the best of all Delillo's novels.
