Howdy
I read it a few years ago, on your recommendation, I think. I enjoyed
it immensely, and was planning to re-read it during our family trip to
the great west this summer. It ain't Pynchon, but then again, what is?
It is very good.
Warlock the novel is a "wobbly" narrative, sort of a proto- spaghetti
western. Every bit of political content was carefully Hoovered out of
it, if not inverted completely, when they made it into a B-movie during
the Eisenhower Administration. The film was strikingly miscast with
Richard Widmark as the *good* guy, who can't hold the moral weight of
the plot against Henry Fonda's performance as the blue-eyed,
charismatic killer-for-hire. Possibly this film was why Leone thought
of Fonda for a very similar role in Once Upon a Time in the West.
I'd second Charles, if there is an appetite for something other than P
among Plisters.
