I think I saw the same interview.  But to call it "hip" is to imply that 
this was not their normal mode back then.  I think it was mostly them being 
themselves, very stoned most of the time, following a very loose story line. 
  Easy Rider is your classic hero journey with lots of drugs, journeys to 
the underworld, transformations, etc.  To mock that era now is easy, but 
ignores the reality of that time.
