People risked their lives trying to reach inaccessible corners of the globe.
In 1761 Jeremiah Dixon and Charles Mason set sail from England for Sumatra,
but their ship was attacked by a French frigate and 11 people were killed.
After regrouping, they left again and made it as far as South Africa before
they had to go ashore to make their observations of the transit.
