I'd be curious to know what you think of Letham's new one, also. I listened to it on tape where appropriate music was inserted at many points. I enjoyed his Motherless Brooklyn, too. Overall, I liked the books about equally but I think FoS is probably the "better" novel. Letham seemed a bit more polished or something but Motherless Brooklyn was very different in terms of plot, characters, etc.
But... no spoilers. (g)
That said, it compares in some ways to Kavalier and Clay which I read when it came out. Both are "boys coming of age" stories set in New York but in different eras. The culture is important aspect in both. I enjoyed K&C a lot, too.
