Sorry to fail in that last point but I'd like to recommend some books that
haven't been mentioned yet:
Michail Bulgakow: The Master and Margerita -- really a masterpiece and
partly very, very funny.
John Barth: Chimera -- his best in my opinion.
Toni Morrison: Beloved -- a masterpiece in storytelling.
David Sedaris: Me Talk Pretty One Day -- irresistibly funny.
And last not least:
Jim Dodge: Stone Junction -- Pynchon wrote an introduction to this novel.
