I would have thought the same thing -- and at first, I thought it was a bit
precious. But after a few dozen pages, I was totally hooked. I also gave it
to my wife -- a die-hard Saramago fanatic with a very sensitive "PoMo
bullshit detector"-- and she loved it. (Though to be fair, I should add that
a friend read it on my recommendation and thought it was simply too much.)
