Dunno. "The Black Cat" had the same number of letters. Was that still
around in Oedipa's time?
I always assumed Edith Hamilton's little book "The Greek Way" was part
of the inspiration. College students of the 50s all had the cheap Signet
reprint. (it was about Greek culture, not male-only sex)
Good name for a homosexual bar.
Remember visiting "The Black Cat" in the early fifties with several
straight (I think) college students. The clientelle looked tough but
weren't threatening.
