There is, in fact, evidence that Pynchon was the source of the quotations:
Playboy Japan
published the piece with the attribution. Like it or not, that's evidence as
far as
any normal measures of credibility are concerned--you've got a writer and a
publisher standing by the article. I think there's a basis for doubting
Pynchon's assent (for instance, even in the 18 December 2001 note that Doug
very generously shared with us, Naoki wrote, "I suspect that it was just a
chat or phone conversation turned into an article."), but so far there seems
to be very litlle or no evidence undermining the credibility of the article.
