I don't see how a better translation would signifigantly change what was said here. His ideas about the cheshire cat like symbolic persona of of the infinitely elusive Bin Laden played out interestingly against the description of the poor person who wants to "kill" the rich. Humans heave their lives up for and against phantom-like ideas and dreams , enemies and heroes. He seems to be saying that only a paranoid imagination informed by the "real" news and real history might be able to penetrate and make sense of the larger human picture. Anyway, the article may not show off Pynchon, the literary rocket scientist, but it tells us how much we all share the unavoidable realities of our time .
By the way I really liked the review of Vineland in the Satirist. His emphasis on the role of the tube in the novel might be a topic worthy of further discourse.
