I think the end of the paragraph which introduces Rex and his specific
"obsession" with South East Asian history and socialist revolution in that
part of the world certainly brings the Khmer Rouge into play. It's a part of
the historical context which cannot be ignored.

    If such an abstraction could have for a while found residence
    in this mortal world, then -- of the essence to Rex -- one
    might again. . . . "
