Hmm... looks like another occurrence of the preterite. When it comes
to dreams car, Italy had two factories in the 60s, Ferrari and
Lamborghini. The horse and the bull. They were both prestigious, and
I remember having scale models of both cars, though the Lamborghini
were more appealing to my childish imagination because of their
names, Countach, Espada, Miura, etc. while Ferraris had those aseptic
numbers, you know. Then in the 80s FIAT bought Ferrari (in the 80s
FIAT bought *all* Italian car companies, Innocenti, Autobianchi,
Lancia, Alfa Romeo, etc. and later destroyed almost everything), and
Ferrari became the only dream car anybody talked about, also because
of Formula One. Lamborghini was almost forgotten, though they still
produced and still produce sport cars which are neither worse nor
better than the Maranello UFOs. Quoting the Lamborghini is a bit like
putting the Mendoza 9mm in the picture, or, on a bigger scale, the
Dutch obsession.
