under the rose... what?

While rereading today "Under the Rose" a doubt assailed me: but have
I really understood the ending of this story? What is the role of the
Sphinx in the ending scene? Just a hint at the riddle Porpentine was
unable to solve? And am I right in thinking that Porpentine was the
real target of Moldweorp's plot, and the consul-general only a decoy?

I know this is a somewhat naïve level of appreciation of such a text,
but you have to pass through this, don't you?
