pynchonoid, quoting:
<<Private, but not at all the antisocial "loon" who is
routinely ridiculed in this forum.>>

Malign, quoting the same article:
"... when a Time magazine photographer tracked him to
an apartment in Mexico City, the author jumped out of
a window, climbed onto a bus bound for the mountains,
and stayed there, growing a mustache that was so
unruly the locals called him Pancho Villa."

How many decades ago did this part of the Pynchon myth
emerge? Four? Five?

Whatever he might have done in his youth, Pynchon
appears to be a friendly, sociable, loving family man
and friend, as reported in this NY Times article.
This is also the portrait that emerges, over the past
two decades, from the bits and pieces of things that
people who have met Pynchon have said.

Growing a moustache and going to Mexico in the '60s
was rather normal behavior, too.
