Pynchon myth

Otto, thanks for passing along that email from Richard
Lane, one of the researchers who has assembled much
biographical info about Pynchon. 

The story of Pynchon jumping out of a window to escape
a photographer sounds even more apocryphal now -- I
suggest that it be considered a myth until credible
corroborating evidence emerges.  As it stands, the
story serves only to buttress the larger myth of
Pynchon as a drug-addled writer unable to understand
the import of what he's written -- this latter myth
based primarily on the uncorroborated claims of Jules
Siegel, who has been on a campaign to discredit and
smear Pynchon for at least the past 8 years beginning
with his efforts to provoke discussion on Pynchon-L
that he could use in his book Lineland. (A credible
case can be made that Siegel has been trying to get
back at Pynchon ever since S wrote about P in Playboy
