Baseball was invented so that, every spring, another
dozen or so writers would have a subject around which
to indulge mawkish reminiscence about their long-gone
childhoods--the smell of neatsfoot oil on leather,
pine tar on ash--and the ignorant, racist
crackers--drooling Redman and fondling their
nuts--recalled as youthful white demigods astride the
summer earth, bats in hand, until age, as it must,
claims their grace and they evanesce into the misty
worlds of used car dealerships, beer distribution, and
bowling alley management; torpor and vindictive
pettiness; sloth, alcohol, and morbid self-pity.
