"'This ain't on the books--that what you think?
Naw--families belong together, is all. Just 'cause I
couldn't save my own marriage don't mean I can't try
to help, does it?' Under the influence of, by then,
quarts of a house specialty knows as Battista's
Revenge, Hector went off mooning about his ex-wife,
Debbi ...." (VL, Ch. 15, pp. 347-8)

"families belong together"

During the 1980's, the mixing of politics and religion
assumed new heights. Through such organizations as
the "Christian Coalition," fundamentalist clergymen
like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson attempted to
convince anyone who would listen that Ronald Reagan's
Republican Party stood for "family values" and was a
bastion of virtue. However, regarding the Reagan
family, there was a different reality....

"French Provincial"

About 1912, collectors and connoisseurs began to show
interest in what was known as Provincial French
furniture.

French Provincial furniture as we know it started to
be made about the time of Louis XIV. Prior to that
time very few provincial furniture items were made,
and these were of very simple construction.

With the establishment of peace in France, more
furniture was produced. Early styles were greatly
influenced by Italian designs, being encrusted with
precious stones, ivory, mother of pearl or carving.

The bourgeois furniture had a distinct Dutch style
from which finally emerged the French Renaissance
style.

>From the beginning of Louis XlV's reign, all inlays
and veneers were dropped and furniture was produced
from native solid woods-oak, beech, walnut and fruit
woods.

During the reign of Louis XV a whole series of pieces
were developed with drawers, such as chiffoniers,
secretaries, and tiny tables for various purposes. At
the same time, simple furniture began to develop along
local lines and the once barren peasant cottage
assumed a homelike atmosphere. Well styled French
Provincial furniture at last came into its own.

It is noted that the style which originated during the
reign of Louis XV conformed with the popular manner of
French tastes, and continued into the reign of Louis
XVI.

Ricardo Montalban

Cf. ...

"'In the parking lot at the Taco Bell in Hermosa,
yes a memorable series of evenings, much celebrated in
the folklore of my people'--this being in the early
days of a Ricardo Montalban impersonation that would
over the years grow more refined." (VL, Ch. 3, p. 23)
