"'Hector, it's probably old news to you, but since
I went under I've been across the USA, [... I've]
honored my side of it, always went where I got sent,
and not once, that was the deal, never did I have to
go anywhere near Vineland. It suited Brock's
controlfreak desires to keep me away from my child,
and bein' a hard case and cold bitch, why, it suited
me too.
"They were both just about crying, Hector more with
frsutration than anything. 'Is waht I been tryin to
tell you,' in his forced, whisepered grunt, 'is that
there is no deal anymore. OK? Brock has taken over
the airport in Vineland with a whole fuckin army unit,
and he seems to be waitin for somethin. Now what do
you suppose that could be? Some think it's teh dope
crops, 'cause he is coordinating with CAMP and their
vigilantes. Some think it's more romantic than
that.'" (VL, Ch. 15, p. 349)
"waitin for somethin"
p. 349 Vond is "waitin' for somethin'." OK, but
what? Reluctantly we must point out that none of
Pynchon's many explanations bear close examination.
(See footnote to the plot synopsis, Chapter 4.)

I'm not entirely sure what they're referring to as a
"footnote" here, but maybe ...
Suddenly, maybe-the-cops (actually it's Brock Vond)
seem to be after Zoyd. (Why? Pynchon never explains
this very well. It may have something to do with
Frenesi, Zoyd's ex-wife, and Vond's jealousy of her --
despite the fact that she's got a new husband, hasn't
seen Zoyd in years, and is still in Vond's tight
grasp. More likely, Vond is after Prairie; his
motivation is only suggested, but it's possible that
he wants to recreate his earlier sexual liaison with
Frenesi. If (as Vond later claims) he is really
Prairie's father, this would be incest!)
