Jolly is making a classic error in reading Pynchon -- or, rather, an error
that Pynchon would ask a more discerning reader not to make in reading any
text. He's seeing art -- "high art" and "low art" -- as another binary.
Jolly, don't ya get it? It's not that Woody Guthrie is good and Mozart is
bad any more than it is the opposite. It's the work of Them to divide shit
up like that and make reg'lar folks think that you have choose.
If TRP favors certain music (say, Charlie Parker's blues-drenched playing,
in the Roseland Ballroom sequence), it's because he sees that music as
living decidely in between high and low (across the divide or within the
"excluded middle) and therefore symbolizing the non-binary approach that GR
is always asking us to keep in mind.
