hi,
i'm working on this thing about mason & dixon and i got a little confused
over the part in which Cherrycoke reimagines this piece of conversation
between James II. and his brother (336-337) (they discuss the borders of
pennsylvania, from which the whole boundary-dispute evolves). Where are
they, while they're talking? Did they define the territory in England
mediated by (faulty?) maps or where they ever in the colonies? I ask this,
because i kinda think that the distinction being made is between a
'fanciful' royal geometry, which judges from representations (maps) and the
Surveyors who have to go muddlin' through the swamps, strugglin' to realize
those freakish plans. it's just not that clear in the novel. i'd be more
than glad to get some opinions.
