unsubstantiated rumor that Melanie Jackson denied Playboy Japan "interview"

Until it's demonstrated otherwise (and unsubstantiated
rumors don't count), I see no reason to believe
otherwise. People I trust have told me that the
Pynchon's Playboy Japan interview is authentic. I had
no reason to trust jbor's bootless counterclaims in
the past, and even less today, because he's offered up
a rumor, and either he has changed the details of this
particular story (about somebody calling Melanie
Jackson's office) himself, or the person who passed it
along to him has changed the details. The p-lister
who made the call could clear this up by reporting
what actually happened.
I find the whole thing interesting for several
reasons.
The whole episode presents a level of ambiguity that
is completely appropriate to Pynchon; I'm open to the
idea that the interview is not authentic, but have
seen no conclusive evidence to support that notion.
I also like the fact that the Pynchon's original
remarks in English have not been published and
reportedly never will be - the mystery about his
actual words will never be solved if that remains the
case.
I was involved from the start, after hearing about
the interview from a respected Pynchon scholar then
contacting a journalist friend in Japan to get a copy
of the magazine and a rough translation of the
interview. I've also been privy to more information
about this episode than has been made public, in
pynchon-l or elsewhere.
This interview also undercuts the brain-dead
insistence, from jbor and others, that "Pynchon never
grants interviews to journalists."
Assuming that Pynchon's comments as published in
Playboy Japan are genuine, they provide insight into
his politics, and, specifically, undermine thoroughly
the claim that jbor made here a couple of years ago,
that Pynchon was a supporter of Bush's cowardly aerial
attack on Afghanistan and the so-called "war on
terror" more generally.
Finally, it's pure delight to see jbor playing this
rumor-monger role, undercutting the efforts he makes
to present himself as a serious Pynchon scholar
elsewhere.
