Hi, the story in question is "Tristan". Quite early
Mann if memory serves me.

BTW, I recommend those unfamiliar with the original
E.T.A. Hoffmann tales modified for the play and opera
- mainly "The Sandman", "Counsillor Krespel" and "A
New Year's Eve Adventure" - to read them. Uncanny
stuff, as Ziggy Freud put it.

Of course, there isn't any somewhat V-ish Stella of
the Epilogue (and Prologue) in Hoffmann.
