I think jbor's paranoia about a p-list conspiracy is
as overblown as the unsubstantiated rumors he's now
promulgating about Melanie Jackson supposedly denying
the Pynchon interview in Playboy Japan.

That depends. If I were covering this story, I'd find
out the identity of that "somebody in MJ's office."
If it turned out to be the cleaning lady or a clueless
intern, *and* if it turned out that the Playboy Japan
journalist had acted ethically, then, yes, the
"somebody in MJ's office" would in fact be "less
authoritative" than the Playboy Japan reporter.
