Saying "troll" is about equal to saying "faggot" or "slut" or "niggah"
It's just another obscene belch, with little or no actual referential meaning. It's now used by those online groups of consumers and suburban idiots--including most feminists--to make them feel superior and part of an all-knowing "clique". Having been online for over 10 years, I find that humans posting on newgroups and websites use "troll" to mean generally, "one who is opposed to our collective viewpoint." Someone on the GOP website saying that Repugs. were all greedy corporate scum would be the troll; on say a feminist site, if a man were to post messages implying that "feminists were irrational, hyper-emotional salt creatures with little or no evidence for their views" he might get branded with the dreaded term "troll."
Originally the term "troll" meant someone who deliberately spread lies, unjustifed flames or misinformation on newsgroups to enrage people. Now it means "people that we don't like," and who are perhaps a bit cynical or even subversive or anarchistic.....
On a NG such as alt. slack trolling is a fine art and you'll often find that the clever "troll" is sort of a cyber-jester, perhaps a hacker, who has reasons for his disruption.....
A pompous venting stooge such as J-bore needs to be trolled..........

Which COL49 character might represent the young po-mo grad. student hipster-narcissist who devotes his or her time to superficial "quests" for literary quibbles? None other than Oedipa Maas herself, who is "unfit perhaps for marches and sit-ins, but just a whiz at pursuing strange words in Jacobean texts. . ." (COL49, 83)
Padre J-Bore: Oedipa est vous
