GR and IG Farben

Thanks for posting that.
The interesting question, re GR and its role in
helping to bring this sort of information into the
literary and pop culture sphere, is how widely read
was this "readily available" material back then.
Your local library probably contains quite a few items
that are "available" - how many people have delved
into them?
It's a semantic quibble - re the meaning of "widely
available".
No doubt, however, that Pynchon has dug up many an
interesting bit of historical information and worked
it into his fiction. It is safe to say that GR put
the info about IG Farben and cartels before an
audience - especially Baby Boomers who were still
young children in the 50s and perhaps not following
these issues too closely - that found it new and
maybe even shocking.
I think you can also make the case that GR itself
inspired some writers to investigate further; the
decades since GR's publication have seen publication
and mass distribution of books covering the German
rocket program, cartels, etc., reaching an audience
that didn't even exist in the immediate post-war
period of the '50s, making it much easier to find out
about these issues than it was prior to GR.
Recall, too, that info about the genocide of the
Herero was available in libraries before Pynchon
picked it up and put it into V. and GR - bringing it
to an audience who previously knew little or nothing
about it.
