First of all, I agree that some background knowledge
is indeed necessary to fully appreciate GR.

Secondly, you are of course hinting at out the
interesting problem of the relationship between
literature and reality, more specifically, that
between literature and history. Although it´s an
interesting question to raise, certainly in respect to
P, I don´t understand why you are developing in this
direction. Why the strict and sole concern with the
veracity of Pynchon´s account? Fiction and literature
certainly have other things to offer besides factual
information (something any decent student of lit. th.
knows, so I don´t see why this knowledge would
undercut the critical enterprise). Also, I´d like to
point out -seeing that you are not a friend of
literary theory and I am- that there has been some
interesting work in this area based on the Possible
Worlds-paradigm in logic. I´m thinking of Lubomir
Dolezel, Thomas Pavel etcetera.
