If (hi)story teaches us anything, it is that, while there are actual
occurrences, the selection, interpretation and explanation of those
occurrences, in particular interpolation and extrapolation from agreed upon
"facts," need not, and probably should not be left (solely) to the
"authorities."
Scientific method suggests that a theory should not contradict given
premises including its own. Anything else goes until proven wrong. Surely
fiction shouldn't be held to a higher standard than that. My own
interpretation of current events usually adheres to Occam's Razor, rather
than some long-winded, often unbelievable, explanation.
