We've learned not to feel good about this. History is against us.
Pedro's finest hour was the shutdown of the Indians (with Manny Ramirez)
only to lose to the Yankees.
Bucky Fucking Dent.
The ball through Buckner's legs after the Bob Stanley meltdown.
Calvin Fucking Schiraldi. It's a verb now. "Here comes Foulke. Let's hope
that he doesn't fucking schiraldi this one."
1975. The Greatest World Series Ever Played. Carlton Fisk. Only to lose in
game seven. I'm glad Pete Rose isn't in the Hall of Fame.
Lonborg and champagne vs Bob Gibson. Which one is in the Hall of Fame?
Before my time but....Williams bunts! Pesky holds the ball. Country
Slaughter goes all the way.
It wasn't just Babe Ruth. Harry Frazee dismantled a team full of legends in
order to finance a Broadway production of "No No Nannette". The Yankees have
never looked back. The Red Sox became the Shiites of Baseball.
Now there is the "Curse of A-Rod".
But it will be small consolation if:
Cabrera holds the ball.
Ortiz has to bunt for a hit.
"Schilling and Champagne" puts Suppan in the Hall of Fame.
Pedro pitches on short rest and blows game seven.
Varitek homers in game six, only to lose in game seven.
Foulke schiraldis.
Doug Mientkiewicz lets the ball roll between his legs.
It will all be for naught.
We are prepared for this. We have always (or at least since 1920 when Frazee
committed treason) accepted it as our fate. But I can't help thinking how
good I'll look sitting in McSorley's on E 7th St. with a Red Sox cap on my
head.
