A month with Beckett
September 2, 2004
The Rubicon Theatre Company, in association with the Manitoba Theatre
Centre, presents the first major West Coast festival devoted to author
Samuel Beckett, Sept. 18 through Oct. 3 at various locations in
Ventura, with pre-festival events beginning Sept. 2.
The festival will feature all 19 of Beckett's plays presented live or
on film; stage adaptations of his poetry and prose; and panel
discussions and lectures with scholars, filmmakers, actors and
directors.

The following schedule includes festival highlights. For a complete
schedule, visit the theater, 1006 E. Main St. in Ventura, or call
667-2900. Festival brochures will also be available at "Waiting for
Godot" performances.
Special events
• The Hitchhiker's Guide to the First West Coast BeckettFest,
Wednesdays through Sundays Sept. 2-17 at the Rubicon Theatre.
Fifteen-minute preview of the festival after performances of "Waiting
for Godot." Free.
• Rubicon Theatre West Coast BeckettFest Gala, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21,
Rubicon Theatre. Michael Colgan, artistic director of the Gate Theatre
in Dublin, directs Barry McGovern, Bill Irwin, Frances McDormand and
Bruce Weitz in readings of excerpts from Beckett's works. Meet the
artists afterward during a dinner at Nona's. $75 for reading; $175 for
reading and dinner. Reservations required.
On stage and screen
• "The Beckett Trilogy" (stage), 7 p.m. Sept. 20 and 4 p.m. Sept. 24
at Rubicon Theatre. American premiere of the stage adaption of
Beckett's "Molloy," "Malone Dies" and "The Unnamable." $35 general, $15
students.
• "Play" and "Krapp's Last Tape," (film), 10:30 p.m. Sept. 20, 24 and
30 at Ventura Century Downtown Theatres, 555 E. Main St. Anthony
Minghella directs Alan Rickman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliet
Stevenson in "Play"; Atom Egoyan directs John Hurt in "Krapp's Last
Tape." $10.
Brown-bag discussions
A series of 30- to 45-minute Beckett-related interviews, lectures and
panel discussions will take place during lunchtime. $10 suggested
donation; free for students.
Highlights include "Beckett First-Person," featuring an interview with
"Waiting for Godot" director Walter Asmus, noon Sept. 18 at Rubicon
Theatre; and "Directing Beckett on Film," noon Sept. 22 at Ventura City
Hall, 501 E. Poli St.; and "Acting Beckett on Stage," with actors Susan
Clark, Robin Gammell, Linda Purl, Conor Lovett, Robin Pearson Rose, Joe
Spano and Rudolph Willrich, 1 p.m. Sept. 27 at City Hall.
