(A small observation that comes with no warning, from nowhere...)
Curious how four of Pynchon's five novels open with the image of something airborne:
COL49: "[Oedipa] thought of a hotel room in Mazatlan, whose door had just been slammed, in seemed forever, waking up two hundred birds down in the lobby ..."
GR: "A screaming comes across the sky ..."
VL: "[...] with a squadron of blue jays stompin around on the roof ... carrier pigeons ... the blue jays who came screaming down out of the redwoods ..."
M&D: "Snow-Balls have flown their Arcs ..."
V., the novel written closest chronologically to P's Boeing experience, doesn't.
