NP Roth essay re his new novel

Among other things what I enjoy about Roth's essay is
his frank acknowledgement of the autobiographical
impulse that motivated him.  It goes against the grain
of much contemporary criticism to bring the author's
biography into the picture (especially in this forum)
but I suspect this is far more common among writers
than literary-critical theorists would like to admit,
how much they are, after all, writing about their own
lives.
