This strikes me as a strange assertion, when you
consider how busy Pynchon was in the 60s writing
stories and novels -- V. (1963), COL49 (1966), GR,
parts of M&D and perhaps Vineland). That's "doing" a
lot, of course, and it's work that has had a
galvanizing effect on a broad audience of readers. He
was a busy guy in the 60s, working hard, making an
impact. I guess I don't understand the need to fault
Pynchon for spending time and effort doing the work
that he was quite obviously called to do, and which he
has done so brilliantly, with such far-reaching impact
on American and world culture. (This need to distort
what is a strength into a character defect -- a
rhetorical strategy that dominates the mediasphere,
from the lowliest email discussion group all the way
to President Bush at the top -- it's a real plague on
public discourse these days, imo.)
