I think davemarc is right on the "investigative"
misnomer.  Pynchon has gone out and done some
reporting, following up on an event, to write a
magazine feature story, albeit one that is graced with
his elegant prose and unique insight.  If he had dug
into the LAPD police files, probed into the actions of
the city government, etc., the project would move into
the "investigative" category.
