<<jbor and I do appear to agree on one thing, that
Pynchon took the time and made the effort to visit
Watts and wrote this essay on that basis. It would
have been fraudlent for him to present the essay as he
did in the NY Times if he hadn't actually reported the
story in person. Not sure what Malign and NeedaLife
are trying to gain by claiming Pynchon lied in this
respect, but it's par for their course, too, the two
Pynchon-l participants who can be counted on to dis
Pynchon.>>
I didn't "claim he lied"; I said there was nothing in
the article to indicate he'd actually gone to Watts.
Which is to say the descriptions are very general and
unspecific; the "quotes" non-quotes, utterly false,
with Pynchon doing a feeble imitation of Joel Chandler
Harris; and the thrust of the article a very general
argument around black/white relationships that could
have been written by anyone with any racial
sensitivity about virtually any city in the country.
There was nothing he wrote that couldn't have been
written in description of Newark or Detroit or East
St. Louis or Roxbury.
As for dissing Pynchon, the article's there to read.
I think it's poor and I've said why. What is par for
the course is your idiot's belief (in fairness, a
cultish stupidity not yours alone on this list) that
if Pynchon wrote it, it must be good, this inept
article and his mediocre stories notwithstanding.
