It all fits together. Stokely was even younger than Pynchon but was a
beacon for young people seeking enlightenment on the race issue. Pynchon
would have noted well what Stokely was saying about the impossibility of
self respecting blacks accepting incorporation into white society. P
would have seen the implications of such a stand. He might well imagine
that Stokely would rather die than accept the white man's terms.

Stokely didn't die. He left the country for Africa and lived quite a few
more years.

One more personal note. In 1964 I gave SNCC my old Volkswagen. However
unlike in Vineland the guy who drove it away was a young white.
