Plot Against America is certainly worth reading, although the political
set-up is the least of it. He's written before about growing up in Newark, both
fictionally and not and seems, every time, to be mining it fresh. He just
writes really really well.
Humboldt's Gift is awfully good. As to his best, or "best" as Monroe
appropriately puts it (appropriate in Bellow's case), there's a lot of good stuff to
pick from. Herzog, Mr. Sammler's Planet, Henderson, Seize the Day ...
More Die of Heartbreak, which nobody ever mentions is a gem. And, despite what
you may have read, Ravelstein is terrific; misread by any number of people who
should know better.
