Tom McGuane. Back in the early eighties I would have bet on this guy to go
straight to the head of the class. He's had a good career, but he levelled
off a while back in a way not easily foreseen. He lives out in Montana on a
ranch and it seems to have mellowed him or something. He can still write the
most beautiful sentences and he's funnier than about anybody. But the early
books -- The Sporting Club is a particular favorite -- made him the writer I
most wished I could write like.

He also had a great talent for creating dimwit, slighty or potentially petty
criminal flunkies -- hired hands, handymen, etc. Earl Olive is one who comes
immediately to mind.
