V. and Gravity's Rainbow. SIGNED.
Philadelphia: Lippincott (1963) and NY: Viking (1972). First editions.
Both books are SIGNED by Thomas Pynchon on the half-title pages.
Accompanying the books are: A) TLS on business stationery from the
Melanie Jackson Agency, LLC. dated November 24, 1997 which reads:
"This is to certify that the signatures on the copies of Gravity's
Rainbow and V. currently in your possession are those of the author
Thomas Pynchon whose literary interests I represent. | Sincerely, |
Melanie Jackson." Melanie Jackson is also, not unimportantly,
Pynchon's wife. B) Two TLSs on business letterhead from ____ to Thomas
Dorn and dated December 10, 1997 which read: "Enclosed please find the
first edition of Thomas Pynchon's V. signed by Thomas Pynchon, along
with the letter of authentication to ____ from Mr. Pynchon's literary
agent, Melanie Jackson." The second letter is identical but names the
novel Gravity's Rainbow. The books were originally owned by a close
friend of Pynchon who convinced the reclusive author to sign the books
to support a public radio station in Southern California. V. is a
tight, fine book with the top stained edge bright and unsoiled in a
bright, fine first state DJ (no reviews on the back panel) with just
light scattered rubbing. Gravity's Rainbow is a tight, fine book in a
bright, fine DJ. The latter is housed in a custom orange linen
clamshell box. Pynchon's signature is of legendary rarity, thus to
have two virtually flawless books signed by the author with an
impeccable unbroken chain of written provenance is, to say the least,
extraordinary and perhaps singular. And the importance is
significantly heightened by having the signatures on his two
masterpieces which are the defining works of Postmodern literature.
