One of several odd things that struck me about this abstract when it
was first posted here a while back is Herman's final comment about how
the excised material from the early manuscript of _V._ relating to
McClintic Sphere is "indicative of Pynchon’s stand on race at the
beginning of his literary career". Surely that's obvious enough from
the Watts article and 'The Secret Integration', if nothing else. And
I'd say that the blurb for the forthcoming book, _Einstein on Race and
Racism_, illustrates that Pynchon's "stand" is as strong now as it was
back then.
